Nigerian workers are expecting a new minimum wage. I really do empathise with the honest worker. I sympathise with them because I really don’t understand how they could be surviving with what some will call a miserly wage.
Let’s ask some basic questions, how much is this government allocating as food allowance for prisoners? How much is the lawmaker earning? How much is a brand new car? Is there any mortgage policy? Is there any sensible health insurance policy? I could go on and on with these fundamental questions! It all boils down to the fact that increasing the minimum wage is not the issue in an economy which is an embodiment of inflation. Nah, Nah!
Making available those things that will make the common man live a life of dignity is more the issue. Like I’ve been saying, let’s have a genuine federalism in Nigeria. Let’s have a situation in which law makers are earning emoluments that an average civil servant is earning.
