I can never ever get tired of writing about Itire. Although, at that time it could be termed a Woop Woop with reference to Lagos Island, the place was attractive for its memories.
There was Komukomu the butcher. He was so successful that he even had some apprentices. In the morning till midday, he usually maintained his sanity.
However, one may definitely not be able to say much about his retaining his senses in the evening. After bar hopping, he would have become a Bacchus personified. He would drink to such an extent that he would strip himself naked.

Students of human anatomy would have had a ready specimen in him.
He would then be prancing about in his birthday suit. Much more than often, he would pick up a quarrel with someone. Since his only claim to strength was alcohol induced, he would, in most cases, be clasping a broken bottle.
Just in case!
In the end, his home became deserted. The tenants fled. As if that was not enough, his wives and children followed suit.
But he remained the last man standing in spite of the fact that the house was gradually depreciating.
There was another personality known as Ropopo. The name actually is an avid description of the bearer.
A girl of buxom stature. The mother had a mama put joint. Apparently, she was eating much more of the food than her mother’s customers.
If the wolewole,sanitary inspectors, of those days had been efficient at work, the mama put ran by Ropopo’s mother would have been phased out. The place was a very good example of a very unhygienic eating place.
However, the small beer had no choice. They continued to lap up the concoction being prepared by Ropopo’s mama put. Truly, adakaje o l’oju anu!
Another person was a prophet. He said he was Kogberegbe, the person that doesn’t care a hoot. I don’t know why, but he remains in my memory. He was bearded and was rather young. But he had made a name for himself. I think he even had a street named after him. And, in those days, that was quite an achievement.
He remains a mystery to me.
