Proud Nigerian? – Adewale Sobowale

When will any sane person, who is not in governance, be happy to be a Nigerian?

I ask this question with all sense of responsibility. Following the infamous arrest of Innoson Group’s helmsman, Mr Chukwuma, by the EFCC, we’re going back to our usual way. At this point, I’m not saying the arrest was in order.

Tribalism!

How I wish we could look at the matter on its merit, and its merit alone. But no, not in Nigeria, about the first thing we consider is where a person comes from.

Great, ain’t it?

I’m not saying any commercial bank that is found not to be in the best interests of customers should not go under. However, how many of those removing their accounts from GTB are really abreast of the situation? And, by the way, what do they stand to gain?

I’m sure if GTB goes down today, at least one Igbo person will be affected. What about those that enjoy indirect employment through the bank.

I hope there are no branches of the bank in the East. If there are what will happen to the owners of the buildings being used as branches? What will happen to the internally generated revenue accruing to those states as a result of branches of the bank being located there? What eventually happens to the economy if another bank has to go under?

Like I said earlier, I’m not against a bank going down for the right reasons. However, if such is proved, it will even go beyond the limitations of ethnicity.

Must we be seen to be withdrawing into our tribal cocoons as civilized as we are?
