Gentlemen! – Adewale Sobowale

Much has been said about the activities of men and a lot will, certainly, still be said.

Take or leave it, despite the fact that women are ‘catching up’, we live, more or less, in a man’s world.

It starts from most religions deities. We look at them as masculine. Most of the prophets in the bible are men. Most traditional prophets too are men.

I will deliberately leave Islam out of this for obvious reasons.

Traditional heads too are mostly men. In fact, the man is seen as the head of each family. Whenever a lady puts to bed, the traditional preference is for a boy-child, even if he turns out to be challenged.

Traditionally, we believe men are stronger than women. In many areas, only men have the right to inherit property.

More importantly, most of the rulers we have today are men. Similarly, most of the terrorists today are men.

One could go on and on!

But one issue has been baffling me. Do we have a training school for men? Or do we just expect them to learn from their forebears?

The girl-child could be said to be luckier here than her male counterpart. The girl is given training up to the extent of which sitting position is right for girls.

And, a lot of positive things have been done towards making the girl-child a successful lady.

Do we have anything similar for the boy-child?

Indeed, boys get away with a lot of indiscretions. Men are allowed to sow the wild oats. Unfortunately, when they do that, women and the society in general are the recipients.

If we don’t or if we don’t have enough, we shouldn’t be surprised at the general misperformance of the average man in the society.

There’s a basic need to train boys to become gentlemen!
