He was quite worried. If you had known him, you would have known that it was quite unusual for him to be bothered by anything.
He used to be a very happy guy. He didn’t have anything to worry about. Who would, if you had inherited a cache of money that even your grandchildren couldn’t finish spending?
The surprising thing about Joey was that he did not touch the money. Rather, he worked as an accountant with a bank in Canada.
And by Jove, what he earned as an accountant was able to tide him by till the next pay day. In any case, salaries were paid fortnightly.
And he was a man about town. The toast of so many parties. As an eligible bachelor he was one of those that made the social life of Montreal tick.
In the course of his interesting life, he had broken so many hearts. Was it his own turn for a heartbreak?
When I asked him out for lunch, Joey said he was not interested. His mind was on Theresa.
‘What’s the matter with Theresa?’ I innocently asked.
‘She is ill.’ He answered.
‘What’s wrong with her?’
‘She has been diagnosed with diabetes.’
‘That’s not a death sentence.’ I told him. ‘Get her the best treatment possible.’
‘That’s what I’m doing!’ He replied. ‘If you don’t mind, you may come visiting her with me after work.
So, after work, we set out for the hospital where Theresa was receiving treatment. One thing was that I had never met Theresa. As a close friend to Joey, there was none of his girlfriends that I didn’t know.
I therefore, spent some fifty dollars buying a bouquet of flowers to present to the lady. At least, I knew only ladies bore Theresa.
And what’s more, I bought an expensive get well card for her. My friend’s girlfriend was also my friend.
We then proceeded on our trip to check out how Theresa was coping with diabetes. My first suspicion was that we had driven past all renowned hospitals in Montreal and yet we were yet to reach where Theresa was supposedly being treated.
That was when Joey drove into a veterinary clinic. The clinic had state of the art facilities.
I was taken aback when Joey introduced a cat, as Theresa to me! And there the cat was in all her feline glory.
I was just thinking about how much I had spent!
