The Yoruba believe people shorn in borrowed clothes, more often than not, suffer some consequences. Apart from the health implications, the clothes will either be slightly bigger or smaller.
But many of us are suffering from identity crisis. That could be an effect of being colonized.
However, I really don’t buy the colonialism idea simply because on the average, African countries have gained political independence for 50 years. That’s more than a lifetime in some countries.
In fact, most of those bearing European names have retraced their steps. What about those bearing religious names?
The danger of people bearing religious names is that they see the good deeds their idols had performed. However, they turn a blind eye to the bad deeds. I won’t mention such names for obvious reasons.
When it comes to clothing, some of us are equally guilty. We prefer buying ‘bosi corner’ to wearing our home made stuff. Anything is good as long as it’s imported.
This brings me to African products. We must praise our artisans. They are great despite the odds.
Amo kini kan b’Ajao je…
Why must they put foreign tags on their products? Let’s know those things are made in Africa.
The movie industry too is catching the craze.
The earlier we started thinking about this the better!
