Thinking in Dollars! – Adewale Sobowale

Some people are quite uncomfortable with the alleged increase in some of the services rendered by the Lagos State government. Maybe those folks have forgotten that a delicious stew doesn’t come cheap, as my people will say. Obe to dun owo lo pa!

It is said now that foreign countries are coming into Nigeria to survey what might soon be declared as the eighth wonder of the world by no less a body than the organisers of the Guinness Book of Records. I’m talking about the mountains of refuse in Lagos State.

The government at the centre has declared that there will definitely be an awesome increment in worker’s salaries later in the year. As we all know Lagos State will not only be one of the states that will start paying immediately the increment is announced, it will even pay more.

Like one of my friends said while we were discussing the issue, authorities in the state might be looking at ways of reducing the population of Lagos. If they can’t reduce, then they are looking towards maintaining the population.

By the way, the fact remains that the American currency, the dollar has been on an upward trend relative to the Nigerian Naira. Would it not be smart of the state government to be compliant?

Lagos State is alleged to have increased tenement rate or land use charge on a three bedroom bungalow, for instance, from 120 thousand naira to a million naira. The state is also alleged to have increased the amount to be paid for car registration from thirty five thousand naira to one hundred thousand naira. Renewal of same is said to have been increased from seven thousand naira to thirty thousand naira.

I’m sure if residents plead with the government, the governor is such a wonderful personality that he will do something about the issue. People should make it known to government that getting money, even in Lagos, is a hard task.

They should let him know their travails. Some have lost their jobs. Some, whose children have finished schooling have had to be fending for them since they couldn’t get any gainful employment.

The ruling class is so much removed from the people that it is not aware of their pains!
