Beyond the retaliatory hooliganism and barefaced looting of the scums and debris of Nigerian society, purportedly against the ill treatment of Nigerians in South Africa, those who are imbued with the ability to really think straight would have seen that the Nigerian society is in trouble!
Even if for the umpteenth time, I will declare that I’m not pleased with what’s happening in South Africa. Especially given the fact that the body language of the government was initially clinical.
However, the Yoruba in their wisdom will say let’s chase away the fox and return to the hen.
The incidents of the past few days should leave no doubt in the minds of all right thinking people that Nigeria is sitting on a time bomb.
It’s like we’re telling the whole world that if South Africans are loonies, they’ll find their seniors in our midst.
The fact is that jobless and hungry people are only waiting for some match to stoke their fire of anger with a system that is lacking in hope.
The South African issue is just a sample. Truly, the words of the late sage, Obafemi Awolowo, is true that the children we fail to educate will become a problem for our own children.
Added to that is the situation of those who get educated and could not find any means to earn their daily bread.
If only they could get together for some worthier cause and if they could be well led, Nigeria will certainly burn.
In the past, it was convenient for people to say Nigeria was on autopilot. However, that would only apply to a working system. I’m afraid to reveal that Nigeria is just not working. Meanwhile, the so-called leaders are just sitting there collecting salaries every month end.
Now is the time to act.
Let’s engage the youths. And there’re various ways we can engage them.
We’re blessed with a great weather and good soil. Let’s start from there. I once said that if government and other concerned bodies in the society could provide the right conditions, most of the graduates roaming our streets would go to the farms.
That’s just a single one out of many.
A stitch in time will obviously save nine. But it must be in time!
