Sapon may clearly be called the center of Abeokuta. It shows it’s the center in every sphere of life apart from the absence of government offices.
There, you have the palace of a traditional ruler, the Osile.
There also, we have the early morning vehicles going to Lagos and other areas. Later in the morning, the buses go to other locations to look for passengers.
In Sapon, you get the best of the local batik, adire. The interesting thing is that European wears are also sold in Sapon. One may therefore go naked to Sapon and buy all materials needed for a party.
The person would then be sakomending!
There are several ‘opticians’ too in Sapon. Most of them are hardly trained for treatment of the eyes but they know the specification of each pair of glasses once they see it.
Printers are many in Sapon. There are also several book sellers in Sapon. In fact, it could be clearly said that any book not found in Sapon must be out of production.
There are many food sellers too. There’s a popular saying among the Yoruba, ‘Se bo timo elewa Sapon’. Sebotimo was reputedly a beans seller.
And when people have closed from work, some of them end up in bars and Churches that dot the area!
