Working at the altar… – Adewale Sobowale

The Yoruba have an idiom: If you work at the altar, it’s obvious that you’ll eat from the proceeds.

Altars are famous in practically all religions. Of course, the priests and their associates work there.

Altars are also rich in materials, cash, produce, products, and so on.

God and gods, have no use for all the proceeds of the altar. So what happens to them?

You should know!

Mr Dapo Abiodun celebrated his 65th birthday sometime ago. By the way, he’s a prince and the governor of Ogun State in Nigeria.

Some have been saying he wasted money.

What most people don’t know is that Nigerians have agreed that elected officials should spend the commonwealth on their behalf.

Ma na wo wa sa
Igunnu lo ni Tapa
Tapa lo ni’gunnu
Ma na wo wa sa!

Spend our money recklessly
Igunnu masquerade is owned by Tapa people
Tapa people own the igunnu
Spend as if there’s no tomorrow!

Last year, the southern governors met in Abeokuta, and they decided to make agriculture their cornerstone. I know they must have worked the talk. Things are so cheap now that an egg is 300 naira in Abeokuta.

That’s different from when I was a farmer in the same Abeokuta when we used to sell a crate of eggs for 600 naira.

The youth are all employed, I wouldn’t know whether it’s gainful or not.

Pupils are enjoying – to add to their enjoyment, libraries are in all schools.

The civil servants are calling for a third term for the gomina because of his good deeds.

Did his critics know that by having the parties, especially the beach one, he was giving some people indirect employment?

Like I said, those who work at the altar must eat from the proceeds.
I’ll finish this post with another Yoruba idiom, eni ifa o to si lo npe ni haram.

It’s those who are not privileged to free things that would term them ungodly.
