I went to a higher institution in the then Oyo state. The school now happens to be in Osun state.
Some thirty something years after leaving school, some wise people decided to start a Facebook page so that we can get in touch with each other again.
That page has been the most interesting page I have been a part of. You might never know what is coming next!
At any time, ‘T’, even in the dead of the night, in some places, someone must be awake and be posting a poser on Facebook. I wrote, ‘in some places’, because I know that members of the page are everywhere on the globe.
Someone asked why members are behaving in a particular manner. I would say members have this, ‘never say die’ attitude to issues. Mind you, issues are are robustly debated.
But to answer the member’s question, I think we went to school when the liberal nature of universities was still there. Supported by the best lecturers this nation had to offer then, we had the best of education both inside and out of the classrooms.
We are talking about a period when the university generated its own electricity. The school had its own bakery which supplied bread to consumers every week. The maintenance section which had so many vehicles under its wing was very active.
The food itself was not more than fifty naira per plate. But most students wouldn’t use their tickets in the morning. Meanwhile, tea and sugar were available, even to those who didn’t buy breakfast.
The mind itself was conditioned by the various ideas garnered from various public lectures and symposia.
I would think we were treated with dignity and none of us is ready to settle for anything less!
