Holiday As Panacea To ‘Recession’ – Adewale Sobowale

That the federal government has declared Monday, the third of October a public holiday is stale news.

The holiday is well-deserved, isn’t it? When an economy is in a so-called recession, we should commit all our affairs to God and just rest. That is OK because God has not given us the wherewithal to do the needful.

‘A little sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest- so shall your poverty come as a robber, and your want as an armed man.’ Proverbs: 24: 33-34.

Our leaders know some things we, the Mumunatus do not know. The first of such is that this economy is not in recession. OK, if that’s too harsh, this economy doesn’t have to be in recession.

Let’s look at it this way. Have the emoluments of the executive, legislative and judicial arms of government been reduced? Have the occupants cut their luxurious lifestyles?

In any case, how many common men can REALLY enjoy this holiday? Yes, in the face of unpaid salaries, job losses, increasing price of commodities, etc.

But the big men can afford to live large at the expense of the common man.

For the common man, it’s not yet Uhuru!
