The prosecution and conviction of a popular actress and her husband in court are now part of our COVID-19 history.
But then, I thought the courts in Lagos State were on a COVID break. Anyway, the accused pled guilty, and justice was served.
However, some artists were to point out that the number of journalists and security agents surpassed the twenty that the law of social distancing stipulates.
I would have thought it better for the police to be empowered to issue tickets to the accused. If the accused disagree, they could go to court.
That would have lifted some weight off the overburdened shoulders of the judiciary.
Another way would have been for the accused’s cases to be heard in the respective judges’ chambers. The judge, the accused, the security details, and a few pressmen could have been present, provided they weren’t more than the twenty prescribed by law.
They could even use the courtroom itself if they are not more than twenty.
But the deed has been done. And if it’s true that what’s good for the goose is also good for the gander, then the media men and security officers must be brought before the courts.
We must show that no animal is more equal than the other!
