I understand the erudite Professor Akintoye wrote a letter to Mr Buhari informing him of Yoruba’s intention to have a nation separate from Nigeria.
In other words, according to the letter, their Yoruba wants to be independent.
I used “their” because I’m not aware of any election among the Yoruba to that effect.
We all know that things are less than okay in the Nigeria of today. It’s so bad that one might be tempted to think it’s another Nigeria when he looks back at the Nigeria in which he grew up.
But then, have those who are in the seats of power who happen to be Yoruba resigned. If they have not, then it means they are part of the Yoruba problem.
Now, presidential elections will take place next year. Apart from a Yoruba being a candidate, so many of us are directly or indirectly involved.
Another point is that is the plan to separate a well thought out one? This comes to mind knowing the Yoruba have never existed as one nation before.
Yet another is that shall we not be exchanging national oppressors for local ones?
The last is if a decision is to be made for me, I should be a party to it. In other words, people’s opinions should be sampled.
Above all, we should have an election. That’s what is done in a democratic system.
Just writing a letter without our knowledge fills me with a fear of an impending autocracy!
