The Slaughter Slab! – Adewale Sobowale

A bull is never friends with the slaughter slab. He knows the place signifies its end. One other thing a bull is perpetually afraid of is anything red.

Red stands for bloodshed. So a bull feels it in the subconscious that nothing red is too good for it

However, Lagosians tend to believe that the slaughter slab is good for them. Or how could we explain the fact that a single person has been riding roughshod over them for about two decades.

The emperor has even extended his tentacles abroad. Abroad means outside Lagos state.

And people can’t call his bluff because most of us have some nasty things in our closets. Lawyers say, he who comes to equity must come with clean hands.

Our hands are obviously dirty!

So, we can’t afford to talk even when the greatest injustice is staring us right in the face. And the injustice is a very emasculating one.

Our freedom to freely choose those who will rule us!

Our democracy is in chains because it has been arrested by the so-called godfathers. They, in turn, have created fiefdoms which are not known to democracy.

I used to think people of Lagos are very sophisticated. When a daughter of the sage wanted to contest the gubernatorial election, if I’m not mistaken, people were quick to point out that they could not serve the father and subsequently serve the daughter.

Those were the days of refined politics!

But now we have a man as the leader of a political party, whatever that means. He had been a senator and spent eight years governing the state of aquatic splendor.

His wife is a senator while his daughter is the iyaloja of Lagos.

It’s true the iyaloja is not a political post. However, the post affects politics in various ways.

Just before the Osun state elections, our man went to Osogbo. When he visited the Ataoja, he, tongue in cheek, told him that Osun did not have his kind of money.

And he does that throughout the southwest. He would very much want the whole country to be his empire.

But, the question remains, are the people benefiting? Even if they are, at what cost?

Anything, or anyone, for that matter, that will stop us from enjoying the REAL dividends of democracy should be avoided like a plague.

This is particularly essential because this democracy cost some people their lives!!!
