A certain governor in the southwest has declared that it takes a lot of courage to be earning less than $24,000 and be presiding over a budget of more than $500,000. He is also ‘visibly’ worried by the poor take home pay of civil servants.
In the first instance, I wouldn’t know if the governor really prepared for the gubernatorial job. I’m saying this because for one to be prepared would have meant taking stock of what he stood to gain and lose by contesting the post.
It’s therefore news to me that the governor only had to be told after he got to office what his take home would be.
Again, if one’s committed to a life of service, one doesn’t actually need to steal, hence one doesn’t need the courage which our governor touted.
Thank God, ex-governor Lateef Jakande is still alive. He’s by no means a perfect man, but we can still see his handiwork all over Lagos.
I tend to bet that there’s no one bearing the name Jakande that wouldn’t be given preferential treatment because of Baba Kekere’s impact on Lagos.
That’s legacy!
About the take home pay of workers, I guess what workers need most is for the basic facilities to be working. If we can have good electricity supply, good road network, affordable health facilities and even insurance policies, etc, I’m sure we would have satisfied most of the needs of our workers.
I wonder why it is that subsequent governments have not noticed the fact that each minimum wage increment brings hyper inflation and we would be back to minus square one!
