May the soul of Alhaji Sheu Shagari rest in perfect peace!
I believe he presided over Nigeria in the country’s heyday. Contesting elections against the intellectually sound Nnamdi Azikiwe, the ideologically sound Aminu Kano and the result-oriented Obafemi Awolowo wasn’t a mean feat.
Even if the election was in a logjam, the fact remains that the courts declared him the winner. He was already in his second term when the military struck.
This same Mr Buhari became head of state after the coup that took place on New Year’s Eve of 1983.
Buhari and his acolytes went into office with no clear-cut plans. It was therefore easy to wage a war against indiscipline against the people by a military which lacked discipline.
If it had discipline, the military wouldn’t have disbanded an elected government. They not only dismissed the government, they also suspended the constitution of the country.
But then, the nation did not learn anything. If they did, Nigeria wouldn’t have been burdened with Buhari again.
But then, I still maintain that the political actors would not have the chance to display their lack of understanding of the needs of the common man if something is not wrong somewhere with the people.
I believe we need to have an attitudinal change. If not, we’ll continue to be burdened with misrule!
Rest in peace, Alhaji Sheu Shagari!!
