When Matter Pass… – Adewale Sobowale

It’s said in local lingo in Nigeria that when a matter gets beyond crying, one begins to laugh!

Uncontrollably too!!

So, it was when I saw a post by a friend, that Nigeria is close to being a failed state.

However, he quoted the Wall Street Journal. Although he had not finished his post at the time of writing this, I immediately went on to make google my friend to check out the details.

I discovered that even the Financial Times carried the story. The respected paper titled its story as, ‘Nigeria is at risk of becoming a failed state’.

I tend to disagree with my friend and both newspapers.

How can a whole Nigeria, as big as it is, be at the risk of becoming a failed state?

Haba!

Let my pal and both newspapers fear God o!!

After all, buoda kulikuli, the aide to Aso Rock on media just told us we should be grateful for the little mercies Mr Buhari is granting us. He boasted that there was a time bomb thrown like Christmas firecrackers every day in the recent past.

But now, it’s been reduced to maybe once a week!

The papers even wrote about the kidnapped school boys who were said to have been released without the government paying a dime.

What they failed to note is the fact that the kidnappers succeeded in creating a balance of the sexes. In 2014, some 276 girls were kidnapped in Chibok. So, with the kidnap of the boys, I really don’t see any problem, especially given the fact that they were eventually released.

The papers also wrote about carjacking and banditry. They further wrote about six Ukrainian sailors being abducted.

What they do not know is the fact that Nigerians have a ‘never say die’ attitude. In other words, Nigerians have the ability to suffer.

That’s why it’s possible for the political class to be stealing their commonwealth and there’s this criminal silence, even, among people who do not know where their next meal will come from.

I can’t but remember a song we were used to in those days:

Tito lo tobi banku banku
Ase ko le ja

He’s a big buffoon
Yet he can’t fight

That song sums up today’s Nigeria!

I just hope Mr Buhari himself could be kidnapped!!
