(un)Man of the Year! – Adewale Sobowale

A newspaper company has made the Nigerian president “its” man of the year.

I believe the company is only being brutally sarcastic or could it be a matter of the proverbial land of the optically challenged where a one-eyed man is king?

Tinubu has been in power by virtue of his leadership of the ruling party in Nigeria, at least since the blatant failure called the Buhari regime. That means he must have had privileged information about the Nigerian economy.

When campaigning for the presidency, he promised to improve Nigerians’ lives.

If he had done his homework and passed, he wouldn’t have announced the removal of fuel subsidy at his inauguration. But he did, thereby increasing Nigerians’ suffering. If anybody wanted to give him an award, the December deaths at Ibadan, Abuja and Okija ought to have made them rethink.

I once bought a dollar for 46 kobo during the Second Republic. Google tells me a dollar is now 1,544.08 Nigerian naira.

I always believe leaders in elective positions are there for what they can offer, but the Tinubu government has always told people to calm down (e lo f’okan bale). They’ve been in a position of calming down and dying while elected officials are smiling to the banks.

No wonder, those who know always say, ” a people deserves its ruling class.”

However, since the company could not call him the best thing since sliced bread, it decided to name him the Man of the Year.
