Apapa used to be a lovely neighbourhood. So many expatriates used to live there.
The nation’s major seaports, Apapa and Tin Can, are situated there.
As a result, the place is well secured . The army, the navy and even the police are well represented there.
However, the roads to Apapa are not in the best shape. Due to the fact that heavy duty, container bearing trucks are plying the.roads, it’s to be expected.
The government is now trying to repair the roads. That’s a good move.
But is it not possible to look into other ways of moving containers out of the ports?
I know there are railway lines to and fro the ports. Is it not feasible to revive those lines? If revived, it would be another way of waking up the comatose railway industry.
Of course, when the port railways come alive, apart from the direct employment of railway officials, so many other people will be indirectly employed.
The authorities may also look into the issue of using the waterways to decongest the ports.
If done, these measures will go a long way in relieving the pressure on the roads. Goods will be cleared from the ports in a less complex manner.
To crown it all, the Apapa environment will be the better for it. The area will return to being livable.
