In Mattew 22:21, the Savior said we should, “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s.’
The Lord made that statement in response to a question on whether it was lawful for Jews to pay taxes to Caesar or not. Caesar happened to be the emperor whose powers were much more than today’s heads of state.
The Nigerian government has through the Corporate Affairs Commission said it would start enforcing the new Company and Allied Matters (CAMA) law as soon as the Nigerian National Assembly gazettes it.
The proposed law affects all bodies registered with the CAC. However, it seems the government is targeting religious organizations. If one would bring it closer home, it affects churches much more than it does mosques. The churches are ‘earning’ tons of money.
And you could trust the pastorpreneurs, they’ve been on the mountains praying and fasting that the will of government might not come into fruition.
Well, I’m in support of the government. This might be one of the few occasions when I’ll support government. But then, my support is conditional.
The first is that government should submit itself to an independent audit of its finances. We want to know what was allocated and what was spent. We also want to know what was returned to the treasury.
As for the so-called pastorpreneurs, if they have nothing to fear, let them submit their activities for government perusal.
Isn’t it interesting that the orthodox churches haven’t had to blink an eyelid on the proposed law?
