One person has died and 25 others remain missing after a boat carrying migrants sank near the Greek island of Gavos, south of Crete on Sunday.

The Greek Herald reports that the Hellenic Coast Guard said 51 people were rescued from the water following the sinking, which occurred about 38 nautical miles south of Gavdos.

A large-scale search and rescue operation was launched under the coordination of Greece’s Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Centre.

Coast guard patrol boats, a helicopter, a drone and commercial vessels were deployed, with assistance from the European Union’s border agency, Frontex.

High winds reportedly hampered efforts to search the extensive sea area for survivors or evidence that could help authorities locate those still missing.
