The controversial Rwanda Deportation policy of the United Kingdom will not apply to asylum seekers in Northern Ireland.
The Guardian reports that a court in Northern Ireland has said the Rwanda policy undermines human rights protections guaranteed in the region under post-Brexit arrangements.
Par of the UK’s Illegal Migration Act were also incompatible with the European convention on human rights, according to Mr Justice Humphreys.
The court ruling found that provisions in the act resulted in a “diminution of rights” in Northern Ireland, including for asylum seekers resident there.
Meanwhile, the British government is thinking of appealing agaimst the ruling. But lawyers have warned that the appeal could delay ministers’ plans to send thousands of asylum seekers to Rwanda.
