June 12: manning the unman… – Adewale Sobowale

It’s no secret that national awards have been conferred on the “heroes” of the June 12, 1993, elections in Nigeria. Some even received “double honours” because they had already been awarded the same honours by a previous government, while some were never awarded at all.

In the first instance, let’s examine the manifesto of the political party SDP, on which the late MKO Abiola contested, concerning his wishes for Nigeria.

There’s no doubt about the fact that Abiola was a very generous man who did a lot for the commoners, and even the rich. He then felt that if he could govern Nigeria, he would be in a better position to satisfy the yearning of the masses.

So, he found comfort in the SDP, whose manifesto included electricity for all, jobs for all, food for all and a war against corruption.

The APC’s manifesto is similar!

But have all these been achieved?

Nada!

We are still looking for courageous men who’ll make this possible in a land filled with milk and honey.

The real heroes of democracy are the citizens Muda who are still languishing in abject poverty. Until we get a president with the courage to provide the basic essentials to Nigerians, the labours of our heroes past shall remain in vain.

Incidentally, the choice is whether ordinary Nigerians want the status quo to remain. If we still fail to recognize that our rulers are weaponizing poverty by giving us the crumbs falling from their tables, I’m so sorry, we’ll remain where we are.

In the event of our “repenting” by taking the bull by the horns, we’ll be surprised at the obvious changes.
