A businesswoman has been sentenced to death in Vietnam.
The AP reports that the woman, who is a real estate tycoon, was sentenced to death in the country’s highest-ever fraud case.
The lady, Truong My Lan, aged 67, was arrested in 2022 and formally charged with fraud amounting to $12.5 billion, nearly 3% of the country’s GDP.
Lan is accused of using her bank to give herself and her friends loans through ghost companies illegally. The loans resulted in losses of $27 billion.
She was also accused of paying bribes to government officials. They included a former central official who has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
