Gena Heraty, the Irish aid worker kidnapped by a gang in Haiti four weeks ago is recovering in hospital following her release yesterday.

Ms. Heraty and her fellow captive were brought straight to hospital following their release on Friday. All eight captives including a three-year-old child are suffering the effects of malnutrition, dehydration and trauma.

Her release comes after weeks of intense negotiations with her kidnappers who demanded a ransom. She was held for 27 days and nights in what an informed source described as “brutally cruel circumstances”.

It is believed she was abducted by a criminal group aligned with Viv Ansanm gang which controls large parts of Haiti.
