Pope Francis has described the US President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to deport immigrants as a “disgrace”.
CNN reports that he spoke during an Italian television interview when he was asked about the incoming Trump administration’s plans to expel undocumented immigrants through an aggressive slate of immigration executive orders by the incoming president.
He answered, “If it is true, it will be a disgrace because it makes the poor wretches who have nothing to pay the unpaid bill. It won’t do. This is not the way to solve things.”
Meanwhile, a top border official in the incoming administration has said US immigration authorities will start carrying out mass arrests of undocumented immigrants across the country on Tuesday.
AFP reports that the move would be the first by President Trump to uphold a campaign pledge to deport millions of undocumented immigrants from the United States.
Trump’s incoming “border czar” Tom Homan broke the news in response to reports in the Wall Street Journal and other US outlets that Trump’s administration planned to carry out an “immigration raid” in Chicago beginning Tuesday.
Homan said, “There’s going to be a big raid across the country. Chicago is just one of many places.
