Donald Trump’s White House team members are helping Nigel Farage’s bid to become Prime Minister in revenge for Labour campaigning for Kamala Harris.
Daily Mail reports that Mr Trump’s key advisers are also debating whether to put Sir Keir Starmer “at the back of the queue” of world leaders invited to Washington after Monday’s inauguration.
The new administration could further humiliate Sir Keir by rejecting Lord Mandelson’s appointment as Britain’s ambassador to the US. The rare move could heighten friction between both nations since the threat has been attributed to the strained relationship between the Labour government and the Trump administration.
An ally said Mr Trump had his eyes on a UK trip but was considering circumventing the British Government by asking the Royal Family for a state visit.
On Friday, Mr Farage hosted a pre-inauguration party in Washington DC. Although Lord Mandelson was invited to build bridges between the two sides, he did not attend.
Labour had told the Trump transition team that Sir Keir’s sending such a senior Labour figure out “is a huge compliment”, however a source from the other side said, “We are not buying that.”
The nominee for the UK ambassador has raised alarm bells due to his connections with China, as he is a strong advocate of close trading and other ties with the country.
