The federal government of Canada has announced plans to assist Toronto with hundreds of millions of dollars to buy new subway trains for its aging fleet.
BurlintonToday reports that Ontario and the City of Toronto each committed $758 million a year ago so the Toronto Transit Corporation could buy 55 new trains for its east-west subway line.
The funding was conditional upon the federal government matching those dollars.
Toronto mayor Olivia Chow says the current fleet of trains on Line 2 is nearing the end of its life.
Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland says the federal government and others want to see the trains built at the Alstorn plant in Thunder Bay, Ont.
However, TTC’s interim CEO, Greg Percy, says they will hold an open bid competition to procure the new subway trains
