That Auction… – Adewale Sobowale

I read this morning that a Lagos State government body recently auctioned some vehicles.

Auctions are very common in the advanced world. I did attend one sometime last year with Buoda Segun. We, most of us, anyway, were in a jovial mood.

Who wouldn’t be in the friendly atmosphere that enveloped the place? Everyone saw it as a form of relaxation.

I wouldn’t think any car was sold for more than $1000. In any case, even without auction, one could get a vehicle at a zero sum!

But in the case of a developing economy like Nigeria, I wouldn’t think it wise to auction what some had used their life savings to acquire. I would have thought it wiser for the offenders to have the offenders fined.

There were even cases of businessmen going to the scene and frustrating the moves of the former vehicle owners to buy off their own vehicles.

That leads us to a the question,

‘Was the auction conducted in a fair manner?’
