Senegal to elect president on March 24!

The authorities in Senegal have announced that the presidential election will be held on March 24. This follows weeks of political turmoil and violent protests calling for an election.

AlJazeera reports that the announcement was made on Wednesday following a Supreme Court ruling that declared outgoing president Macky Sall’s plans to hold elections after his term expires on April 2 unconstitutional.

Sall dissolved the government on Wednesday.

The crisis prompted an emergency meeting of the Economic Commission of West African States to try to calm the widespread violence.

The Constitutional Council also challenged the president by saying that his proposal to hold the election on June 2 was not following the Constitution.
