It is no news that the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has disinvited Mallam Nasiru el-Rufai from being a speaker at its national conference. The reason is that el-Rufai as governor of Kaduna has turned a blind eye to the killings in Southern Kaduna.
The NBA is right in doing so for allowing el-Rufai to speak at its conference would have been tantamount to applauding his lackluster performance.
However, let’s have a look at the other invitees/speakers to the conference. Some of them are Messers Olusegun Obasanjo, Nyesom Wike, Yemi Osinbajo, Femi Gbajabiamila, Tanko Mohammed and Abubakar Malami.
If these people are the best the NBA could offer then the Muslim lawyers in Kaduna state are right not to participate in the conference.
Maybe the NBA has forgotten but we do remember.
Malami is the Attorney General of the Federation. He’s infamous for disobedience of court orders despite being a lawyer.
Osinbajo is the Vice President of Nigeria. He’s sitting tight, enjoying the perks of office, while the administration is misruling the nation. He too is not only a lawyer but also a pastor.
Obasanjo is former military ruler and also a former civilian President of Nigeria. His presidency was controversial. His presidency supervised the Odi massacre in Bayelsa state. He was also said to be involved in a third term bid. Under him too, some billions of Naira was voted for power, yet Nigeria is still in darkness.
We could go on and on.
If the people that have been invited to speak at the NBA conference are Nigeria’s best, then our best is definitely not good enough!
