Sarah Smith, the new Labor MP representing Hyndburn, has welcomed the United Kingdom government’s plans to strengthen border security, enforce immigration rules, and increase returns.

The Lancashire Telegraph reports that Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced that one hundred new specialist intelligence officers and investigators would be recruited into the National Crime Agency this year to target criminal smuggling groups. She also said an intelligence-driven program should target employers who profit from hiring illegal workers.

Mrs Cooper also announced increased immigration detention spaces to enable more returns and enforcement of immigration matters.

MS Smith said, “On border security and the asylum system, as in every other area of government, the sheer scale of incompetence and the staggering waste of taxpayer’s money under the Conservatives have left the new Home Secretary with a huge mess to clean up.

Mrs Cooper also said the new Border Security Command is already gearing up with fresh staff being urgently recruited and additional staff already stationed across Europe.
