Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, has called for the protection of multiculturalism as the conflict in the Middle East drags on.

9News reports that the Prime minister has continued to back ASIO and Australia’s security measures as a political argument over refugees fleeing to Australia from ravaged Gaza continues.

The opposition leader, Peter Dutton, had called for a ban on refugees from Gaza. He claimed adequate vetting was not taking place.

But Albanese said, “Peter Dutton plays politics at every opportunity. It’s important that we value multiculturalism, we celebrate it, and we cherish it,” when he visited Sydney’s Ferragosto festival of Italian culture.

Australia has granted over 2,000 visas to Palestinians and rejected a further 4,600 since Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel. However, of those given visas, only about 1,300 have arrived and remain in Australia
