An Israeli air strike has hit houses in al-Shati, one of Gaza’s historic refugee camps, and another hit houses in the al-Tuffah neighbourhood.

Both left at least 38 Palestinians dead.

According to Hamas, a residential block in the al-Shati area used as a refugee camp was struck several times. People had to clamber over mountains of rubble after the attack.

Another strike targeted the houses in the al-Tuffah district.

World Health Organization officials said Gaza’s health system was nearing collapse as casualties were pouring into the aal-Aqsa Hospital.

An Israeli had earlier been shot dead in the Palestinian town of Qalqilya.

The event happened after heavy shelling near the offices of the International Committee of the Red Cross on Friday, when at least 22 people were killed.

Head of the ICRC in Rafah, William Schomburg in Rafah, described the attack as “horrific”.

However, an Israeli defence spokesman said there was “no indication” it carried out the strike.
