It was a day of celebration for those who left everything they once had to call a brand new place home, as Bridgeport, Connecticut, honoured the city’s refugees and their families at Seaside Park on Saturday.

It was part of World Refugee Day.

Deao Byakisaka, director of the refugee service for the Connecticut Institute For Refugees and Immigrants, said, “First thing to know is that we celebrate hope,”

Susan Schnitzer, president and CEO of the institute said, “It’s very difficult for clients. They’re getting jobs, they’re learning a new language, the kids are enrolling in school. This is just a day to celebrate with everybody.”
