Columbia’s migration agency has announced that at least 540,000 Venezuelan migrants who are guardians to minors residing in the country will be given legal status.

A destination of choice for millions of Venezuelans seeking to escape their country’s political and economic problems, Columbia is also a thoroughfare for those finding their way to other countries.

Over 2.8 million Venezuelans currently live in Columbia. The move will, therefore, benefit adults who care for some 270,000 minors who have permission to reside there.

Agency director Carlos Fernando Garcia said, “It’s a special permission to stay, like the previous ones, that fundamentally seeks to integrate guardians, those people who have responsibility for minors who have a temporary protection permit and who live in Columbia.”

In 2021, former President Ivan Duque gave Venezuelans living in Columbia a ten-year legal status. Many migrants took the offer.
