Letter From Gaol!!!

Dear General,

I just got the news that the courts have affirmed you as president. I learned they threw away Atiku’s case.

The judgement wasn’t surprising even if it was a blow.

In the first basis, there should have been no case. That’s because the constitution itself is nothing but a sham. It’s a fakery because the opening reads, ‘We the people of Nigeria…’

I’m not aware of any meeting by the people of Nigeria or their genuine representatives where an important document like a constitution was written.

Again, the case itself speaks of the shallowness of you and your party. I say this because I’m aware of the fact that section 131(d) of the constitution states that, ‘A person shall be qualified for the election to the office of president if he has been educated up to at least school certificate or its equivalent’.

I would have thought you or your party should have saved yourself the embarrassment of presenting a certificate you didn’t have by using the stated, ‘equivalent’.

As a retired general, I would have expected you to use evidence of your various trainings in the army as the equivalent which ought to be acceptable.

You could then have avoided lying under oath. By the way, in saner climes, perjury is taken as a serious offense.

But then, our country is a place where anything goes.

The main thing is even that, when you look at the constitutions of most advanced countries, education is deemphasized. As long as a candidate is popular and the people feel he’s the right person for the job. So be it.

We would have saved ourselves all this time wasting and money consuming litigations by delving much more on popularity than education.

But then, I know we still have a long way to go.

And that’s one of the reasons behind my call for a revolution which your government is now using to blackmail me.
