Ontario Premier Doug Ford and US President Donald Trump criticized each other on Monday, with Ford throwing the first jab during an interview with a local radio station.
Speaking to The Associated Press Monday, Ford said, “He underestimates Canada. We’re all in. Up here, we’re at a fever pitch; everyone’s in for an economic war. They know they’re going to have to sacrifice.”
He also said that Trump has “declared war, economic war against his closest friend and ally.”
Alternet reports that it’s not the first time Ford has unleashed on Trump, even threatening to flip the power switch to the United States. That threat came back when Ford told the AP, “everything is on the table” if the trade war continues, including cutting off power and minerals from Ontario.
City News reports that Trump, in one of his meandering social media posts, later called Ford a “flunky” and compared him unfavourably to his deceased brother and former Toronto mayor, Rob Ford.
Since then, Canada has vowed to hit the US back with dollar-for-dollar tariffs, and Trump has threatened additional 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel.
“Lots of ‘bluster’ from Doug Ford, who is the premier of the Canadian Province of Ontario, but who is better known as the less charismatic, intelligent, and overall unimpressive brother of the late, great, Rob Ford,” Trump wrote.
