Nothing Is Free! – Adewale Sobowale

Nothing more brings to mind the hard times we are in than the fact that some southwestern states in Nigeria have legislated, in their respective houses of assembly, that people sinking boreholes will henceforth be paying some money.

This is to inform citizens that, even in Freetown, nothing goes for free. However, I think the governments have forgotten more than a couple of things.

I think people digging wells should also be made to pay. You know Nigerians, most people digging boreholes might claim they’re only digging wells.

Beer guzzlers too should be taxed. You know when they drink, they can not help it. They have to urinate. The unpleasant odour of their urine is not too friendly to the environment.

It’s about time we start collection of money from people fetching water at public taps. By the way, if couples get attracted to each other at a public tap, they must pay. More often than not, it has been discovered that singles go to public taps so that they might meet eligible members of the opposite sex.

Even in the homes, we must measure urine in bottles. That is to say urinating in the comfort of your homes is no longer free.

As for the United Nations water programme. Any chemical or machinery they bring in under the programme must be taxed. They must pay the correct duties.

When we do all these, we will be achieving a lot. In the first instance, our internally generated revenue will enjoy a boost. Second, we will be able to employ more school leavers to man the new posts. Third, we will be able to monitor the environmental impact.
