A US mother and her 6-year-old son were released this week after spending over three weeks in US immigration detention.

The Times of India reports that Sarah Shaw and her son were detained after a brief trip to Canada. Sha has lived legally in the US since 2021 and was detained with her child because she did not realise her travel permit had expired.  Although her son’s documents were valid, they were taken into custody by Customs and Border Protection and transferred nearly 2,000 miles to the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas.

Shaw had received confirmation of her work permit renewal in June, but mistakenly believed it also extended her travel authorization.
