Greece Burns Overnight!

Greece is facing another day of intense wildfires, with multiple fronts burning from he mainland to the islands.

Tovima.com reports that, in the past three days, more than 230 wildfires have broken out, fueled by strong winds and scorching summer conditions.

Major firefighting operations are reported to be going on in Patras, Zakynthos, Chios, Vonitsa, Preveza, and other areas. Authorities have issued a barrage of emergency alerts via the 112 warning system. They urged residents either to prepare for evacuation or to leave immediately. Police, the military, and the coast guard have already rescued dozens of people. 

Weather forecasts warn of continued strong winds across the Peloponnese, western and central Greece, Attica, the Aegean islands, and Crete, maintaining a high risk of flare-ups. The General Secretary for Civil Protection has designated large parts of the country as “very high risk” for wildfire today.
