The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, has said budget cuts to the UNHCR are driving more migrants to Europe.
In an interview on Monday, he said, “There is no doubt in my mind that people are already moving from Chad to Libya – Sudanese refugees. Give more assistance to states where people are ready to stay before going back home. You solve a lot of your problems by doing that.”
The UNHCR faces a serious budget shortfall after President Donald Trump stopped funding from some UN agencies.
The US was the commission’s largest contributor, doling out about 40% of its total donations.
