Six million undocumented immigrants in California, including 3 million in the Los Angeles metro area, could be affected by mass deportation plans touted by President-elect Donald Trump and his border czar-designate.
4 Los Angeles reports that the incoming border czar, Tom Holman, said on Fox News, “We are already working on the plan. I’ll be going down to Mar-a-Lago this week to put the final touches on the plan. We are going to take the handcuffs off ICE.”
He said the administration intends to focus on public and national security threats first, with plans to double ICE agents in sanctuary cities if they do not help the administrative effort.
Trump wrote “true” to a social media post, stating the incoming administration is preparing a national emergency and to use “military assets” to deport immigrants.
“The reality of ICE being resourced and prepared to do that on Day One is unlikely,” said Amanda Schuft with the Immigration Defenders Law Centre, who believes it will take time to fund and staff any large deportation efforts. She said undocumented immigrants need to seek legal advice and understand their options and their rights ahead of the administration taking office.
