While the US is awaiting the return of President-elect Donald Trump’s return to the White House, many immigrants in the US are getting alarmed at the massive deportation plans he has vowed to carry out.
Amjambo Africa reports that on December 13, the Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition (MIRC) invited immigrants living in Sanford to a meeting at the Adult Education Centre with MIRC Executive Director Mufalo Chitam, where she shared information about organizations committed to defending immigrant rights. For over a year now, Sanford has welcomed many New Mainers, particularly from Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Speaking about a recent trip to Texas where Chitam met with representatives of organizations all planning for the upcoming administration, she said, “We met with the aim of ensuring that to together we are stronger, and that we can deal with this situation and make it clear to immigrants that regardless of their migratory status, even if they are minimally documented, we can work to help them. Even if we have to go to court, to the senate, to Congress to defend the interest of immigrants, we will do it.”
Different organizations are preparing to protect immigrants from various angles – the legal, the cultural, and the economic angles. Chitam spoke about the economic importance of immigrants in Maine.
According to the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development, New Mainers play a vital role in assuring the state’s economic future.
