A sample survey has shown that about 10% of permanent residents in Japan are yet to pay their taxes or their social insurance premiums, according to the Immigration Services Agency of the country.
The Mainichi reports that due to this, a bill that would strip the offenders of their status as permanent residents if they wilfully refuse to pay taxes and social insurance premiums is under discussion in the Diet – the country’s national legislature.
The revision would abolish the current Technical Intern Training Program for foreigners and establish a new worker training system to accept unskilled foreign workers in fields with labor shortages. The proposal also includes stricter requirements for permanent residence status to crack down on workers who do not fulfil their obligations.
