The Public Prosecutor has ordered the detention of two suspects accused of belonging to a criminal network specializing in smuggling migrants across the Mediterranean, and has moved to prosecute other individuals implicated in the case.
The Libya Observer reports that the prosecutor’s office said investigations began after receiving information from the Special Tasks Directorate about the importation of noats used for migrant smuggling from the coasts of Garabulli, Zuwara and Zawiya toward the Mediterranean Sea.
Prosecutors supervised a xsearch operation that led to the seizure of boats packed inside 59 shipping containers that had arrived at Misrata port. Two members of the network were also arrested during the operation.
According to the statement, both suspects admitted to importing 200 boats that were used in smuggling operations since 2023. Investigators ordered their pre-trial detention and issued warrants for the arrest of additional suspects linked to the network.
