US President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni met at the White House and signaled hope for a new US-EU trade deal highlighting a growing ideological alignment between the two conservative leaders.

The Times of India reports that Meloni would be the first European leader to meet Trump after he imposed 20% tariffs on EU exports earlier in the year. The tariff has now been suspended for 90 days. Meloni has now pitched herself as a key intermediary between the US and Europe.

Throughout her visit, Meloni emphasized their shared worldview, from curbing immigration to battling “woke” ideology.  She said, “The goal for me is to make the West great again, and I think we can do it together.”

Although the atmosphere was friendly, Trump returned to familiar criticisms accusing the EU of trying to “screw” the US on trade and said the bloc needed to “get smart” on immigration and step up on defence spending in NATO.
