Sixty migrants are feared to have died while attempting to cross the Mediterranean from Libya to Italy or Malta.
The Middle East Monitor reports that SOS Mediterranee, in coordination with the Italian Coast Guard, rescued 25 people in a “very weak” condition on Wednesday. Two unconscious people were flown to Sicily by helicopter.
According to the I.O.M., 2,500 migrants died or went missing while attempting to cross the deadliest sea last year. The number for this year stands at 226.
The survivors said they departed from Zawiya, Libya, seven days before they were rescued. However, their engine broke down after three days. That left their boat lost and adrift without water and food for days. They further said at least 60 people perished on the way.
