On Monday, migrants in Spain began submitting applications to legalize their status as the country implemented a new amnesty program.

Times Now reports that the initiative aims to provide a pathway to legal residency. It could impact hundreds of thousands of unauthorized refugees.

The program offers a one-year renewable residence permit to immigrants who have resided in Spain for at least five months and maintain a clean criminal record. The deadline is the end of June.

There are concerns regarding the limited timeframe for processing applications, with estimates suggesting that up to 500,000 migrants could be eligible. The Spanish think tank Funcas projects that around  840,000 individuals may seek to benefit from this program.

To facilitate the application process, over 770 post offices across the country have opened their doors to applicants. Additionally, individuals can apply at 60 social security offices and select migration offices, while online applications commenced last Thursday.
